RESEARCH: CLAUDE CAHUN

The french photographer Claude Cahun portrayed both personal and political sides within her work while expressing  and playing with the concepts of gender and sexuality.

Each image of Cahun's is portraying a different person, a different gender, often sported with a shaven head. She adapts to each character with almost a theatrical part about it.

“Masculine? Feminine? It depends on the situation. Neuter is the only gender that always suits me.”

There can be much more to a self portrait, just like with Cindy Sherman's. I can't imagine any of my subjects will go to this much depth to get their 'selfie' but it's really interesting to look into the different ways that a self portrait can be taken as essentially that is what a 'selfie' is.
